In a letter from the Department for Transport, it has been confirmed that the bill for this very expensive train set will be picked up by the British taxpayer. There are no concrete plans to make businesses pay anything towards it.

According to government statistics, there were 29,900,000 people paying income tax in the UK in the tax year 2013-14. Based on this figure, each taxpayer will each contribute £1,672 to its construction (£50,000,000,000 / 29,000,000).

If the cost rises to £80bn, as predicted by the IEA, the taxpayer will each have to pay £2,675.
